Alcoholism

There is an insidious disease creeping through our nation. It is infiltrating people from every walk of life. I daresay that most people afflicted with this don't even realize they have it. It brings just as much pain and suffering as any other fatal illness that may be brought about by a virus or other pathogen. In fact, this disease is brought about by a bug that could be considered more deadly than any other. A virus of the mind. It acts like any other virus, replicating itself until it takes over. But instead of a physical creature, this replication takes place in the form of diseased electrical impulses. Diseased thoughts. These viral thoughts continue until they overwhelm the brain's natural defense system against such things. You know, the part of the brain that shuts down such obsessions as wiping off every doorknob you see for fear of germ infection (we laugh at such people, think "What about Bob"). Or natural brain function that tells the hand not to thrust itself into hot coals.... No matter how pretty they look. It removes the minds ability to laugh a knowing laugh at a ridiculous idea.

Alcoholism is an obsessive disorder that disarms all logic, all rational thinking.

This "thought germ" is killing my wife right now.

I'm so sorry to hear that, Billy. I hope she is getting help. Because there is help, if the person truly wants it.

Your sentiments are appreciated. She has just started being involved in a 12-step program. Both of us are trying and hoping.

It is amazing that only a few generations we as a country decided to make Alchahol illegal. It was overwealmingly accepted after the concience of the nation could not tolerate deadbeat, abusive fathers and others that were enslaved by that demon. I actually did not drink at all for about 9 years after I became born-again, but then started drinking a few beers here and there and then found myself wanting a few beers daily and to drown my sorrows in it. Jesus drank and it is not a sin per se, but drunkards have no place in the Kingdom of God. I thus, recently eliminated that habit from my life and will not drink alchohol more than one day a week. It is basiclly a way of bowing your knees to your problems instead of submitting to God and enabling him to be Lord of your life. I think the fear of God and a resolve to be all you can be are the best ways to overcome that problem.

Alcohol, as with all addictions is a crutch. Rather than looking to God for our happiness we look to outer things to fill the void within our lives if we don't have some kind of spirituality. I have an addictive personality, and I'm fortunate that I realized that before I got into trouble with alcohol. I gave up alcohol, caffeine and cigarettes because I couldn't moderate myself. Am grateful I have a strong will.

Good luck Billy. The first step to healing is acknowledging she has a problem.
